A golf handicap is a number that represents how many strokes above par you typically shoot. A 15-handicap golfer usually shoots around 87 on a par-72 course. A scratch golfer (0 handicap) shoots around par.

The handicap system lets players of different abilities compete fairly. If a 5-handicap plays against a 20-handicap, the 20 gets 15 strokes of relief, distributed across the 15 hardest holes on the course.

How your handicap is calculated

The USGA's World Handicap System (WHS), adopted in 2020, uses your best 8 scores out of your last 20 rounds.

The formula for each round:

Score differential = (Adjusted gross score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating

Course Rating measures how hard the course is for a scratch golfer (typically 68-74). Slope Rating measures how much harder it is for a bogey golfer compared to a scratch golfer (ranges from 55 to 155, with 113 being average).

Your handicap index = average of your best 8 differentials out of your last 20, multiplied by 0.96.

Example calculation

You shoot 92 on a course with a Rating of 71.5 and Slope of 128.

Differential = (92 - 71.5) x 113 / 128 = 18.1

If your best 8 differentials average 16.0, your handicap index is 16.0 x 0.96 = 15.4.

Course handicap vs handicap index

Your handicap index is portable across courses. Your course handicap is the number of strokes you get on a specific course, adjusted for that course's difficulty.

Course handicap = Handicap Index x (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating - Par)

On an easy course (low slope), you might get fewer strokes. On a hard course (high slope), you get more.

What's a good handicap?

The average male golfer in the US has a handicap of about 14. The average female golfer is about 27. If you're a 10, you're better than roughly 75% of golfers who maintain a handicap.

How to get a handicap

  1. Join a golf club or use an app that connects to the GHIN (Golf Handicap and Information Network) system.
  2. Post at least 3 scores. (Before 2020, you needed 5. The WHS lowered the minimum to 3.)
  3. Your initial handicap is based on the lowest differential from those 3 rounds.

GHIN membership costs $25-40 per year through most golf clubs. Apps like 18Birdies and The Grint also offer handicap tracking.

Max handicap

Under the World Handicap System, the maximum handicap index is 54.0 for both men and women. This was raised from the old limit of 36.4 to make the system more inclusive for beginners.

Why handicaps matter

Without handicaps, a 5-handicap golfer would beat a 25-handicap golfer almost every time. The handicap system makes golf one of the few sports where players of vastly different abilities can compete in the same event and have a genuine chance of winning.

It's also the best way to track your own improvement. If your handicap drops from 22 to 18 over a season, you know your game is getting better, regardless of which courses you played or how hard the conditions were.
