What Is Smash Factor?
Smash factor is ball speed divided by clubhead speed. It measures energy transfer — how efficiently you strike the ball. A perfect driver smash factor is 1.50. Most amateurs average 1.42–1.46.
For irons, smash factor decreases because the ball compresses less. A 7-iron's ideal smash factor is 1.33. A wedge is about 1.25.

How to Measure Your Swing Speed
Launch monitor: Trackman, FlightScope, or GCQuad give the most accurate readings. Available at most golf stores and fitting centers. Expect to pay $25–$50 for a session if not buying clubs.
Portable devices: PRGR Launch Monitor ($200), Swing Caddie SC300i ($400), Garmin Approach R10 ($600). These are accurate within 2–3 mph for swing speed.
Rule of thumb: Divide your average driver carry distance by 2.5. If you carry 225 yards, your swing speed is approximately 90 mph.
How to Use This Swing Speed Calculator
- Set your driver swing speed. Use the slider to match your swing speed (60-130 mph). If you don't know it, use the rule of thumb: divide your average driver carry distance by 2.5.
- Select strike quality. "Tour" for center-face contact, "Good" for slightly off-center, "Average" for typical amateur contact. This adjusts the smash factor.
- Read your results. The tool shows ball speed, carry distance, total distance, and smash factor for your driver. Below that, a full table shows estimated numbers for all 12 clubs in your bag.
Benefits of Knowing Your Swing Speed
Correct shaft flex. Swing speed is the single biggest factor in shaft flex selection. Use our Shaft Flex Recommender with your speed to find the right flex.
Choose the right driver loft. Slower speeds (under 85 mph) need 12-14 degrees of loft to maximize carry. Faster speeds (100+ mph) optimize at 9-10.5 degrees. Wrong loft costs 10-20 yards.
Realistic distances. When you know your actual speed, you stop overestimating distances. Better club selection leads to more pin-high approach shots and lower scores.
How to Gain Swing Speed
SuperSpeed Golf training protocols add 5-8% swing speed in 6 weeks for most golfers. The protocol uses 3 weighted training clubs swung at maximum effort. 10 minutes, 3 times per week.
Physical fitness matters. Core strength, hip flexibility, and rotational power directly impact swing speed. Improve your overall technique with our swing guide.
