How Many Clubs Should You Carry?
The USGA Rules of Golf allow a maximum of 14 clubs. You can carry fewer — there's no minimum. Most pros carry exactly 14. Many beginners would play better with 8–10 clubs.
The key is covering distance gaps evenly. A 30-yard gap between two clubs means you're guessing on shots that fall in between. Aim for 10–15 yard gaps throughout your set.
Beginner vs Advanced Bag Setup
| Club Type | Beginner (10 clubs) | Mid Handicap (13 clubs) | Low/Scratch (14 clubs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Driver | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| Fairway Woods | 1 (5W) | 2 (3W, 5W) | 1–2 |
| Hybrids | 1 (5H) | 1 (4H) | 0–1 |
| Irons | 6–9 iron (4) | 5–9 iron (5) | 3/4–9 iron (6–7) |
| Wedges | PW + SW (2) | PW + GW + SW (3) | PW + 50 + 54 + 58 (4) |
| Putter | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Where to Spend Your Budget
Putter: 40% of your strokes. Invest here first. A $150 putter that fits your stroke saves more strokes than a $500 driver.
Wedges: 60% of shots happen within 100 yards. Good wedges ($100–$150 each) with the right bounce and grind make a bigger difference than the latest driver.
Driver: Biggest distance club. Get fitted. Even budget drivers ($200–$300) perform within 5–10 yards of $550 premium models when properly fitted.

Benefits of a Properly Built Bag
Cover every distance. The right 14-club combination gives you even yardage gaps from 40 yards to your maximum distance. No more "in-between" clubs where you have to force a swing. Check your gaps with our Club Distance Calculator.
Play to your level. Beginners benefit from more hybrids and forgiving irons. Advanced players need precise wedge gapping and workability. Using clubs that match your skill level makes golf easier and more fun.
Save money. Knowing what you actually need prevents impulse buys. A beginner set at $300-$500 outperforms randomly assembled clubs costing twice as much.
