Golf shoes aren't required by the rules. Most courses allow any flat-soled, non-marking shoe. High heels, flip-flops, and metal spikes on soft greens are the main things courses prohibit.

Golf shoes help with traction during the swing, especially on wet or hilly ground. A pair of spikeless golf shoes costs $70-$150 and works for both the course and casual wear.

The biggest difference is traction during the swing. Your feet push against the ground with 1.5-2x your body weight during a driver swing. On wet grass or a slope, regular shoes can slip. Golf shoes are designed for this lateral force.

Spiked shoes have removable plastic cleats (soft spikes) on the sole. They dig into the turf for maximum grip. Best in wet conditions, on hilly courses, or for players with fast swings who generate a lot of ground force.

Popular spiked options: FootJoy Tour Alpha ($200), Ecco Biom G5 ($220), Nike Air Zoom Victory Tour 3 ($180).

Spikeless shoes have rubber nubs or textured soles instead of protruding cleats. They're comfortable for walking 18 holes, look like normal sneakers, and you can wear them off the course. About 60% of golf shoes sold today are spikeless.

Popular spikeless options: Ecco Biom H4 ($170), Adidas Tour360 Knit ($180), FootJoy Flex ($80), Nike Roshe G ($80).

Which to choose? If you play in dry conditions and walk the course, spikeless is fine. If you play in the rain regularly or on hilly courses, spiked shoes give you better footing. Rain golfers should go spiked.

Do you need waterproof golf shoes?

If you play early morning rounds (dew), in the Pacific Northwest, in the UK, or anywhere it rains frequently, yes. Walking through wet grass for 4 hours in non-waterproof shoes leaves your socks soaked by hole 3.

Most golf shoes priced above $120 are waterproof. Budget spikeless shoes ($70-$100) typically are not. Check the product description for "waterproof guarantee."

Breaking in golf shoes

Wear new golf shoes around the house for 2-3 days before wearing them on the course. Leather shoes need 3-5 wear cycles to mold to your feet. Synthetic shoes break in faster (1-2 wears).

If you get blisters on the course, check your socks. Moisture-wicking golf socks ($12-$18 for a 3-pack) make a bigger difference than the shoes themselves. Cotton socks absorb sweat and cause friction.

How often to replace golf shoes

Golf shoes last 2-4 seasons for a golfer who plays 30-50 rounds per year. Signs they need replacing:

  • Sole traction nubs are worn flat.
  • Waterproofing has failed (wet socks after playing in dew).
  • Midsole cushioning has compressed (feet ache after 9 holes).
  • Upper material is cracked or separating from the sole.

Spiked shoes: replace the cleats (soft spikes) every 15-20 rounds. A pack of 20 replacement cleats costs $10-$15. Most pro shops have a wrench to swap them.

Golf shoe care tips

  1. Clean them after every round. Knock off dirt and grass. Wipe leather shoes with a damp cloth.
  2. Air dry them. Don't put wet golf shoes in a hot car trunk or near a heater. Stuff them with newspaper to absorb moisture.
  3. Apply waterproofing spray every 10-15 rounds (for leather shoes). Nikwax and Scotchgard make golf-specific sprays.
  4. Rotate 2 pairs if you play more than once a week. Shoes need 24-48 hours to fully dry between rounds.

Can you wear golf shoes off the course?

Spikeless golf shoes work fine as casual shoes. Brands like Ecco, Nike, and Adidas design their spikeless models to look like athletic sneakers. Some golfers wear them daily.

Spiked golf shoes are less practical off-course. The cleats click on hard surfaces, wear down faster on pavement, and scratch floors. Change into regular shoes before walking on tile, hardwood, or concrete.
